October is breast cancer awareness month. Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among American women. Women under the age of 40 should get breast exams every one to three years and women over 40 should have annual breast exams.
My recommendation: Get to know your breasts! Look at your breasts. Feel your breasts. By knowing your breasts, it is easier to notice any changes that you can consult your physician about. This link provides a great guide for self-exams:
If you still feel unsure, have your physician show you exactly what to do!
So what are you looking for?
Change in shape or size
Pain in any area of the breast
Nipple discharge other than breastmilk
A new lump in the breast or underarm Change in shape or size
If you notice any of these things, see your physician immediately.
